Oklahoma Medicare Supplements: Your Options for Medicare Supplement Insurance

Oklahoma Medicare Supplements provide additional health coverage to Oklahoman seniors. 30% of Oklahomans are seniors, slightly higher than the national average. As this number grows, health facilities may experience over-crowding and increasing amounts of pressure. In order to receive the best medical care, seniors in Oklahoma may benefit from additional health coverage.
Seniors can supplement their Medicare coverage in a variety of ways. Both Medicare Advantage part C and Medicare Advantage part D can provide you with care should an unexpected ailment arise. In a recent poll conducted by the AARP nearly 1 in 6 Oklahoman seniors did not have medical insurance, this translates into extremely high costs if you get hurt or sick.

There are five main options for supplemental medicare insurance in Oklahoma :

1)  Medicare Part A – Original Medicare that is available when you turn 65. You will need to pay an annual deductible.

2)  Medicare Part B – Part B provides additional hospital coverage, some durable medical equipment, and primary care. There is a monthly premium and small deductible associated with Part B coverage, but it is administered and fees are set by the government.

3)  Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage) – These are the privately administered and publicly subsidized programs that often offer more customizable and comprehensive coverage.  Of course, they will cost a small amount more in terms of monthly premiums, but many seniors choose these plans for their additional benefits.

4)  Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage)* – Oklahoma seniors who need prescription drug coverage should purchase a prescription drug plan. Prescription drug plans are administered by private companies and there are an estimated 58 prescription drug plans in Oklahoma (according to the latest, 2008 facts cited by the Department of Health and Human Services). These plans range in monthly premium costs from around $16 on the low end to as much as $98 on the high end.

5)   Medigap – Much like a Medicare Advantage plan, a Medigap plan fills the “”gaps”" in coverage after you select Medicare Part A or B. You will need to first be enrolled in Medicare A and B before you decide on a Medigap plan. Each of the 12 plans, A-L, offer various levels of coverage. Coverage never changes, but cost does. Though you may think that the lowest cost plan is always the best, the higher cost plans generally provide better service and support.

While supplemental medicare coverage is extremely important, the numerous options are very confusing. Accroding to the medicare website there are over 57 medicare plan and 49 perscription drug plans offered in Oklahoma alone!
